I did that, but it didn't help much. I wish we could hack in a better one.

I heard the Treo had a similar problem, and they found a fix for it.

From what I heard the speaker is already at capacity. I noticed that my wifes speakerphone was clearly audiable in a busy store today at nearly 40 feet. Turning down the volume a touch might keep the speaker in range to help this problem. As for hacking in a new one (you realize that would void your warrantee, right?), its doable...

I see 2 options... easy and not as easy.
easy: simply dissasemble your ppc6700 and dremel out the self portraite mirror. This occludes the speakerphone and blocks sound.

not as easy. disassemble the ppc6700 and solder in the speaker from a treo 650. there should be plenty of junked 650's laying around... or just get it from here: (click image to go to link)

just solder that bad boy on there, make it fit with the dremel, and kapow! you got speakerphone.

If you do this, please post pics. I'm not brave enough to void my warrantee just yet... but soon... very soon...

There are also bluetooth options out there for speakerphones if I'm not mistaken

Shocked

Clearly I have a defective unit. My head has to be within 4 inches to hear anything when on speaker. Not much better than speaker off.

no, the phone sucks up close. try playing a mp3 or use the speakerphone, and back up in 10 foot increments. the sound sucks, but sucks identically over a range of distance. look into a headset, bluetooth or otherwize... it may be the best solution for you

To be honest, I have no issues with my speakerphone either. I can easily hear it across the room. I haven't tried it in the car yet, but it seems like it would work fine.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the newer phones vs. older (blue vs. white keyboard). Mine is a newer one with a blue-lit keyboard. Spy, do you and your wife both have the same (older or newer) phones?

both older... we got our the very first week they were availiable... before they were availiable to the public. check my sig... 22 sept 05 was the day our phones arrived. Im not sure there was a whole lot of difference from the 2 different versions. The speaker doesnt seem to be one of the changes in the versions.
