Fix your 6700 brick after FAILED ROM UPDATE!

Ok I am posting this because I tried the new Rom Update on my new ppc6700 and it failed! I found this info on another site and think it should be a sticky for Tutorials. This will allow you to get the ppc6700 in serial usb update mode so you can retry the rom update and fix your Brick! Smile

1. disable active sync and unplug the USB from the device
2. Press and hold in this order Power->Voice Memo->reset->release all
3. device should say serial
4. plug in USB, should now say USB
5. Make sure device shows up in device mgr
6. activate .exe (New ROM update)

Good Luck!

Ok I will sticky this for the time being or someone says it has problems.

Much thanks for the important contribution.

When Spymongoose returns he can decide if it can be moved to completed.

In general, it's actually pretty difficult to truly brick your phone these days

I just wanted to comment that the screen on mine was very dark when I did the message and at first I did not think it was working. Look at the screen from an angle and you should see the SERIAL or USB text at the top very faintly.

The same is true for many other devices with firmware. It fairly common to have a minimal bootloader in ROM,
which can be used to load a new firmware into the Flash-rom or EEPROM (depending on the device).

I think manufactures sometimes use that for loading the main "rom" image the first time, as that would
double as a QA test of write access to the EEPROM/Flash-rom.

Not to mention it prevents the developers from bricking their phone if they upload a faulty "rom" image for
testing purposes. (Sometimes a "rom" image will work fine on the emulator, but fail on the device itself.)

Hi, i had a problem with my verizon xv6700 phone, which i posted on pdaphonehome.com and someone linked me this page for information.

Here is my problem: I had my phone in the cradle, and i was loading programs onto it.. and then i double clicked on an icon, which happened to be the new ROM update.. when i realized that it was the ROM update (which i did not need, because i already had the latest verzion), i wanted to stop it.. but not cancel or stop button.. so stupid me, i unplug it..

now i get the serial v 1. 02 screen.. i tried the instructions, but nothing happens.. Windows XP does detect the phone.. but ActiveSync does not.. when i run the ROM update now to install the software, i get error message 101, which says to check all the connections and to make sure the phone is powered on (however, the phone cannot be powered on, other than seeing the black screen that says serial v 1. 02)

so i desperately need help QUICKLY.. i am without a phone till somebody can PLEASE help me

thank you
-David

It's easy to brick your phone if you are trying to do a rom update from another region. ( like i did )

Good News:

Took it to sprint and asked if they can repair it( i bought it second hand, it's a year old and had no warranty, and of course if you guys seen my Hardware Mod, the phone was totally modified) . I Drop it off and had to come back in 5 hours. They gave me the bad news when i came back. THey said " Sorry, we cannot fix your phone. " , But you can pay 55 dollars for a new one . " Very Happy

Note: I stripped off my paint before I brought it in.

and yesterday 01/26/07

After i got my new phone, i didn't like all the new update it have on it. And behold, i tried to update back to the original rom, and guess what ? They screens got weird looking and it didn't boot. I was like.. " dame , not again...bricked another phone"..so i decided to search around and came on this thread. and guess what, It worked and i just can't update back to the old rom though, i guess i have to live with the latest updated rom. Until next time,

wow i got it to work... didn't use these instructions, i think i messed something up somewhere. i used a ridiculous mix of everyone's directions and somehow it booted aku3.3! it has a telecom boot screen... i hope that it's made for a different service doesn't screw anything up.

I've got the Sprint PCS PPC 6700 and I tried to install the firmware update from the UTStarcom page that was specifically for Sprint. It went all the way through the process with out any apparent hitches. I clicked finish and hit reset as directed in the instructions, but the phone no longer powers up at all.

It was supposed to fix some issues that I have been having with the device (backlight turning itself off, phone putting itself into flight mode, not synching with my email, not recording my incoming calls to the call log, not synching with my Outlook, etc.). It's fixed all right - I'm now in the possession of a total brick. It won't power on and I've tried the instructions in this email for recovering from a failed firmware update. I took it to the Sprint store and they want $40 for a new one, which looks like my best option.

I thought I'd post here and see if anyone has any other ideas.

TIA,

do you even get the bootloader screen? the backlight will NOT turn on, so you'll have to look at it REAL CLOSE. i used a little LED flashilight because it's nearly impossible to see. you'll see "SERIAL" at the top and like "V1.00" or something like that at the bottom. i had to do a buncha jerry riggin to get mine to ever get outta that bootloader screen, it was a freakin headache. good luck!

oh, if it is at that bootloader screen you at least have a chance of re-flashing.

what mrfordwrench is referring to in step 6 is a ROM .exe file that you run to install a rom on your device...the name can vary
