Would anyone use this?

I know there are many list programs out there. Many you enter everything on the PPC. Others have way more than I am looking for.

I am developing one that:

Enter the items on the PC
Sync to PPC
Lists are ordered by store/shop/5 and 10
Store and Item lists are kept from previous entries and can be edited incase of typos

PPC side:
Keeping the program small so...no list updating/saving
Display only. Use check boxes for use while in the store. They clear when the program closes.
Lists shown by store. Go to the grocery, hardware, and lingerie store all with one trip and one list.

I am doing this for personal use. Would anyone here be interested in this program if I decide to make it available.

The people here at PPC6700Users.com will probably be my deciding factor. If many here think they would use it, then I may put it out.

Let me know your thoughts.

I'd use it if you'd allow an option to add things in. Sometimes I only have access to the 6700 and not a PC. But if I want to remember something real quick, it'd be nice to add it in and such.

There was a program I remember from way back in my Palm days (help me out here PPCGal) that would let you keep not only a list of items, but also a list of stores, and it would correlate which items could be purchased at which stores, including things like asile numbers (i never used that part).

So my milk could be purchased at 3 different stores, while my TST (tiger striped thong) was only available at one.

Looks like your well on your way to that here. I'd buy it. Just don't make it require .NET CF; I'm boycotting that--too much memory, too many bad experiences.

Don't know how good they are, but on http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php and search for "shopping list" you'll find half dozen programs.

They are all old...

I am certainly not going to stand in the store and add isle info on my phone. So, that part will not be in the scope of this product.

I was not planning on keeping item info with each store. My thinking is that I know where I buy milk. If I happen to make the list using Grocery Store 1 and stop in at Grocery Store 2 while running around, I know I can get those items there.

It is currently being developed requiring CF 2.0. It makes the programming sooo much easier. My PPC is pretty slim right now. So, adding 2.0 would not be a problem for me. If that is a deal breaker for too many people, I may rethink that decision.

Screen real estate is a huge issue for me on the PPC. I could throw a small "Add" button that pops up another form.

Another issue is that I had no plans on syncing the list back to the PC (I don't plan on writing a sync conduit, just have the file copy to the PPC when finished on the PC). So, once you add an item on the PPC, you have to add all items on the PPC or if you add to the list on the PC, you have to remember to include the ones you added on the PPC. (did that make sense or are there too many PCPPCs going on?)

Also, I was trying to keep everything smaller on the PPC. Not having the whole Location and Item lists on the PPC would help do that. But, installing to the card will work just fine and you can add a hella lot of items on a Gig card.

I know, this goes against what I said above about CF2.0. But, I feel that we will eventually install 2.0 anyway as programmers get lazy and use the easier coding methods Wink

Okay,

You have convinced me to stop being lazy. As I thought about it, I skip downloading any program that requires CF2. Why in the hell would I write one that way?

So, the PPC version undertook a rewrite last night.

Hopefully I'll have something out this week.

Nope. It was HandyShopper. That to me was the killer shoppling list app. It looks like the author is making a PPC version, but I have no idea if this is an active project or not. Handyshopper was/is donationware, but I certainly would pay for an app equal to it.

I think what I've been seeing lately with regards to .NET (both PPC and PC), is that while it's easier to develop in, it's lead to some software being written by people who have no business writing software.

I'll admit, I'm in that crowd of people who really shouldn't be writing software; I haven't touched code in about 15 years, and back then it was things like Cobol, RPG, and even a bit of PL1--all mainframe stuff.

Anyway, there's been quite a bit of "sloppy" .NET code out there, and I really have been shying away from all of it. If the program is in .NET, I'll hold off until I see a huge userbase and everyone extolling the virtues of the program before I'll even consider it.
