| BitPIM & QPST to work on PPC-6700, xv6700, or HTC APACHE |
|
First: I am NOT responsible in any way for anyone messing up their phones by following these directions. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for your own actions.
**WARNING** You MUST use QPST 2.7 BUILD 215 (or NEWER) to access a 6700, the MSM6500 Qualcom chip IS NOT SUPPORTED by BUILD 91. **WARNING** After finding this out I noticed that Windows CE is NOT running inside the MSM but the MSM is a "So Called" MODEM for the WinCE device, So in other words WATCH WHAT YOUR DOING.... HALF THE FEATURES in the chip might NOT even be used with WinCE. Basically don't expect EVERYTHING you change on the MSM to change something in WinCE. That said, here is the missing link to get the windows versions of BitPIM and QPST to work on the Sprint, Audiovox, UTStarcom PPC-6700, Verizon xv6700, or HTC APACHE What to do: (Explaination in NEXT post) 1. download the "Qualcomm (PID:3197) Drivers" from: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=333184 2. extract the above ZIP file to a empty folder 3. goto extracted folder and edit BOTH the "qcmdm2k.inf" AND "qcser2k.inf" files: qcmdm2k.inf [Models] section: CHANGE: %QUALCOMM02% = Modem2, USB\VID_05C6&PID_3197&MI_00 TO SAY: %QUALCOMM02% = Modem2, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0B03&MI_00 qcser2k.inf [QcomSerialPort] section: CHANGE: %QcomDevice% = QportInstall, USB\VID_05C6&PID_3197&MI_01 TO SAY: %QcomDevice% = QportInstall, USB\VID_0BB4&PID_0B03&MI_01 4. UNINSTALL and REMOVE ALL ATTEMPTS with other drivers 5. UNPLUG your phone from USB 6. put phone in DIAG mode #3424 and click START 7. plug phone USB back into computer 8. two "Found New Hardware" wizards come up, point both to the directory where the NEW inf files AND drivers are 9. look in "Device Manager" in "Devices by connection" mode for a chain of THREE devices off your USB port: ("Composite USB Device", "Qualcomm Proprietary USB Modem (PID 3197)", "Qualcomm Diagnostics Interface") If you find ALL THREE of these with NO RED X's or YELLOW !'s your good 10. start QPST Config and ADD the DIAG port (second of two NEW COM ports) 11. Start the program you want (ie. Service Programming, EFS Explorer) and select the COM port you just setup (NOT WORK OFFLINE mode) to read in settings from your phone. 12. now HAVE FUN (**REMEMEBER** you NEED your SPC (MSL) from your provider) |

That said, here is the missing link to get the windows versions of BitPIM and QPST to work on the Sprint, Audiovox, UTStarcom PPC-6700, Verizon xv6700, or HTC APACHE Explaination: (What to do in PREVIOUS post) I looked ALL OVER for how to do this and found NO LEADS AT ALL. I then thought OK, this DIAG prog is a Passthru to the modem chip. I looked up Vendor ID: 0BB4 AND Product ID: 0B03 in USB ID lists and all I could find was references to the HTC Apache which DIDN'T help either. I then went to the Linux for Apache group and looked at a BOOT-TIME screen shot which showed the Qualcomm MSM6500 getting INITed. When I looked I saw the Vendor ID: 05C6 AND Product ID: 3197. Taking this info. and knowing that the DIAG prog is most likely a Passthru to the chip I hunted on the internet for this VID & PID and found it associated with a few Qualcomm Modem drivers and thought "I wonder if HTC is just being an EVIL BAS**RD", Guess what: THEY ARE!!!! HTC's DIAG APP is not showing the MSM for what it is, it's puting it's OWN VID & PID on the device but giving FULL access to it. I changed the VID & PID in the INF files and presto, changeo I pulled a Qualcomm Modem/Diag port out of a HTC APACHE's A**, LITERALLY. I hope this helps ALOT of people. |

Sooooooo....what exactly can we do with our 6700s now should we apply this hack? Forgive my ignorance.

I'm not sure about Qwest phones, but for Sprint it's ##digits#

I'm not sure, you need to find out how to run the special codes for your company. Sprint is ##CODE# and Verizon is (I think) #*#CODE#.
Check the internet and you might find yours. |

Not that I know of. I hope this major find helps someone get to the bottom of the GPS not working at all for Sprint but showing up in DEBUG mode for Verizon users.
I hope someone can go into the Qualcomm chip on a Sprint and on a Verizon to see if anything is different on the GPS tab of QPST. Since I only have a sprint looking at the tab is a foreign language to me. Once we get the DEBUG mode working "Hopefully without 922 or 911" I'm going to go to the Linux for Apache group and find out how to use their sniffer called Haret to find out what calls to what ports the DEBUG menu throw out to get it's info. This should head us toward a Virtual COM port senario where we can point GPS software toward. |

BUMP.......
Anyone made any revelations with GPS or EVDO ring-through problems using the QPST method? |

if you have one of the newest models they say you can't do the RTN reset to fix the EVDO Ring Problem since the Radio settings are default in ROM instead of being programed into the NVRAM by the device ROM Updater patch.
YES, someone SHOULD be able to use QPST to go in and set the EVDO Ring Problem straight. (Sorry, to many settings and I'm not sure which it is and I'm NOT going to break a PERFECTLY WORKING phone to find out) for GPS (GPSOne or AGPS) I think QPST would be the answer as well. Here's my thought, if someone could compare QPST settings between a Verizon xv6700 and a Sprint PPC6700 I think we could find out why Verizon people are a few steps ahead of us. There is a WHOLE TAB dedicated to GPS/AGPS/GPSOne in QPST and without a comparison I'm scared to tinker because again I don't want to messup a perfectly working phone. I hope someone comes to our aid to see if we're on to something. |

I've posted in some other forums for Verizon folks to use this method to post their findings but none have done so. I've also asked those with the newer Sprint IP830w (which apparently doesn't suffer from the EVDO problem) to look at their settings to compare. Unfortunately, no one seems to want to assist.

Not sure how helpful this will be... but... I have a PPC-6700 through Alltel (yes, there is someone out there besides Sprint and Verizon!). I have been looking for a solution to use the embedded GPS for almost a year with no success. The impression that I have gotten from looking through various boards is that the Allltel version is similar to the Sprint version, with a few exceptions. I have applied the registry hack to get the GPS status to show up in FieldTrial.exe, and I now have the GPS menu item in addition to HDR and 1X. For each item (vertical speed, latitude, etc) there is a value of "N/A". My guess is that this is where everyone has gotten to to this point. I have followed your directions to get QPST working and am mostly there... it connects to the phone and I can browse the file system though EFS. However...
I can't get to this screen. I assume it's under "Service Programming"? At this point, I don't know how to specify my phone since it's not in the list. Is there a model number I need to provide? Or, am I in the wrong program to begin with? If you can give me this clue to get to the GPS tab in QPST, I would be happy to share my Alltel settings, though I suspect that they will be the same as the Sprint settings. At least at that point I would be ready when someone with a Verizon phone gets their settings to you... Just trying to help (and looking for some help in the process... isn't that what these forums are all about?) |

Answerman,
You are correct, although it is only a gpsOne tab under the Service Progamming app. I tried to enter values for the PDE IP and port (that I found on some other threads), but when I tried writing to my 6700 I don't think the write took, as nothing changed when I went back to nvm\nvm\nvm_gpsone in EFS Explorer (still 8 bytes of 0x00). I don't know what build of QPST you're using, but in QPST 2.7 b.215 it automatically targets the 6700 as a SURF 6500-ZRF6500 (N3), and the gpsOne tab is present. I believe in b.91 you need to target the phone as an FFA5105-1900 to see the tab. Also in b.215 there is another app called Factory Test Mode Application that has a specific setting to test standalone GPS. Of course, since standalone is locked down the test failed. But at least there's the option of testing it should someone, somewhere, find out how to unlock the standalone GPS feature of the 6700. Hope this helped. I'm working on it too. |
