How To : Do a Registry Hack

** WARNING **
Messing with the registry can be potentially fatal to your phone and your wallet (when you have to go to sprint and buy a new phone!)

First you need a registry editor - I suggest PHM Regedit (it's free and it works!)
If you can't find it on your own, start looking here

* Backup, then, Back up, then Back up again!!! (you get the picture!)
Using PHM "Tools > Backup..." *give it an identifiable name (I keep an additional backup on my desktop just in case)

1: Find the Key
In the File Explorer view (just like on your desktop)
Browse to the key that is to be edited, they're normally in the format of "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/.../.../..." or sometimes for short "HKLM/.../.../..."
*exact same thing

2: Find the Value
Switch views to display the values to that key
Click on the button that has an up/down arrow on it to change views

3: Edit the Key
Click on value to be edited, change the value, select ok - if you screw up, hit cancel.

I like to turn off then soft reset after pretty much everything I do.
Do ONE registry hack at a time...make sure your phone works fine, if not, you know exactly which hack is the culprit and can use that backup you made previously to rollback any mess ups!

*Having issues installing PHM? read this

If you don't feel comfortable messing around in the registry, read THIS!....
For those who may feel uncomfortable doing these hacks themselves,
heres a proggie that has a nice interface that does quiete a few.

See this post in the Tutorials forum: How-to : Install, Run, and Uninstall Software onto your PDA. You should know that the tutorial states that you need a software called cabinstl in order to install files. This is not the case on the 6700 with WM5. CAB file handling is built in, you do not need cabinstl.

PHM regedit - Registry Editor

Is v0.70 the current version. From you link, the release date is November 2002! In cyber time, that's eons ago. His site is still covered in smoke apparently.

Very nice consolidation of Hacks here; quick to find, easly instructions, not much idle chatter (excpeting the above of course)

Thank you.

Not sure where you're getting it from, but the link that I provided links to a *.CAB, which is NOT a desktop application.
* cab files must be transferred to your ppc, THEN run from there

I've come up with a better way to distribute registry hacks than using a registry editor. A registry editor is often too difficult to use for non-technical people, and even for myself it's a pain to redo all the hacks manually after I've performed a hard reset. The CAB file format allows us to distribute registry hacks that install themselves automatically.

I've created a CAB file for each of my registry changes using freely available CAB creation tools from Microsoft's site. The user only needs to install the CAB and everything is automatic. The changes to the registry are even backed out automatically when the CAB is uninstalled. I've attached a .zip file with the tools (they're a small part of the huge "SDK for Windows Mobile 2003-based Pocket PCs" which is a pain to download & install). There's no documentation but there is a sample file included. I was able to find all the documentation I needed to use the tools by searching MSDN.

One quirk I discovered is that the tools will not create a CAB without at least one file in it. To accomodate this I created a short text file description of what the hack does and told the CAB to install that file in \Program Files.

As an example see the CAB file I created for the GlyphCache hack.

I have the regedit program, but when i go to edit the value by selecting new value, it gives me string, binary, dword, multi-string, and expandable string as options for the new value. how am I suppose to know which it is and how do I know what the current value is? Is there a better editor that gives me more info before making a change? I am using the suggested regeditor previously posted. any help would be appreciated...
